If you are a new, or even experienced knitter who has not tried mitered square knitting, you are definitely going to want this book! Designer Melissa Leapman has teamed up with Leisure Arts to bring you “Mitered Square Knitting”, which includes 6 fun home decor projects to liven up your space and beef up your knitting skills. In the book you’ll find patterns for a “Single Square Potholder”, “Four Squares Potholder”, “Garter Ridge Pillow”, “Garter Ridge Afghan”, “Garter Pillow”, and “Garter Afghan”.
Each pattern includes a shopping list at the beginning with all the supplies you’ll need as well as any special techniques used (nothing too hard). The patterns are well written and easy to follow – something you can expect with all Leisure Arts pattern books. In the back of the book you’ll find all the symbols and abbreviations found in the book, as well as diagrams and information on any special stitches. There’s also a “Yarn Information” section, in case you want to use the exact yarn the designer used.
Before trying out the patterns in this book, I had never tried mitered square knitting before. Had I known how easy is it, I would have tried it sooner! Seriously, making the squares is fun, easy, and kind of addictive! Probably one of my favorite things about these squares is that you start by casting on the largest amount of stitches and decrease down until there is only one stitch left, so there is no casting off!
I used the “Garter Afghan” pattern to make a baby blanket for my niece. Using size 6 needles and Lion Brand “Ice Cream” yarn, I made 12 squares, and then joined them together using mattress stitch. With the way the pattern is designed and the symetricallness of the squares, mattress stitching the squares together was so easy – no guessing if I’m seaming correctly.
After the blanket was finished I did add a single row of single crochet around the edge for the border, which finished it off nicely, and makes the joins just a little more sturdy. I’m sure with this being a baby blanket, it will see many washes in the washing machine and dryer – and should hold up nicely for years to come!
I’ll definitely be making more of these squares in the future. I’m thinking a scrappy square blanket would look amazing!
If you’re looking to learn a new skill or make some fun home decor projects, “Mitered Square Knitting” will keep your fingers busy and your home cozy! You can purchase the book as either a paperback or an instant download PDF – so you can start knitting right away! Merry making!
