When the Kids’ Snuggies crochet pattern book came in the mail I was super excited! My daughter has been wanting a mermaid tail blanket for some time now, so she was over the moon to receive one for Christmas!
Kid’s Snuggies includes 7 cozy patterns from designer Lisa Gentry. There’s a Princess Dress, Ice Cream Cone, Mermaid Tail, Pencils, Pizza Slice, Watermelon Slice, and Sugar Skull. Some of the patterns use bulky weight yarn, and some use worsted weight. As per usual, the “shopping list” is at the beginning of each pattern, so you’ll know exactly what supplies you need. The patterns are well written and easy to follow and are all marked Easy to Easy+. An advanced beginner could make any of the patterns in the book for sure. In the back of the book you’ll find symbols and abbreviations, information about yarn, and diagrams of any special stitches you might need assistance with. This book is a nice pocket size, which means it will fit nicely in your project bag or purse.
As I said above, I was super excited to start in on the Mermaid Blanket! The yarn suggested in the shopping list was no where to be found (online or in stores), so I substituted with Bernat Blanket yarn in the color “Ocean Tides” (how appropriate, right), and it took just under two balls of the big size. Using the suggested hook size gave me a really loose fabric, so I went down to a size 12mm hook and that worked out swimmingly.
Other than going down a hook size, the only other changes I made was in how the blanket was seamed. Instead of using whipstitch I slip stitched the back seam together, and instead of seaming the bottom closed and then sewing the tail on, I turned the blanket inside out and seamed through all three layers at the same time with single crochet, effectively closing the bottom seam while attaching the tail. It was a little tricky, but it came out looking really nice!
If you’d like to surprise a child in your life with a fun and cozy blanket, “Kids’ Snuggies” will get you going on a super fun and unique project that’s sure to be loved! It is available in paperback or digital download PDF, so you can get crocheting right away. Merry making!

I’ve gotta be honest, I’ve crocheted most my life making up patterns for the blankets/throws I’ve made. I can’t read a pattern, but I’m learning slowly. So my favorite project to make for kids, is blankets/throws. However, I will learn how to read patterns to make toys and more for my grandkids. 😊
