The Easiest Shawl – Free Knitting Pattern
|The Easiest Shawl – Free Knitting Pattern
Sometimes you need a knitting pattern you don’t have to think about, one you can knit in front of the tv while binge watching your favorite episodes. I haven’t been knitting that long, so I can say for sure a beginner could make this. This patterns is so basic, and probably one that has been passed down for generations, it’s very similar to the “Granny’s Favorite Washcloth”.
I set out to see how big a garter stitch shawl one of those Caron Cakes would make (it’s just under 400 yards). Using ALL of the yarn and size 9 needles, it came out to be 50″ across tip to tip, and 20″ top to bottom. The worsted weight yarn worked great with the size 9 needles, giving it drape and not stiff, but not too open either. You can use any size yarn you like, just make sure to use needles appropriate to the yarn. This makes a great stash buster project if you switch colors every few rows!

There is one little “trick” I’d like to let you know about. When you haven’t been knitting for a while, anything that helps you stay on track is key. For the pattern, you will be doing one row with yarn overs in it, and one that is just knitting. Place different color stitch markers on each side of the center stitch (where the pattern calls for stitch markers). I used orange for my first marker and green for my second marker. So on row 3, the green marker is the first one I see, and I repeat a little mantra. “If it’s green then I know to knit the whole row”. The next row the orange marker will be the first one. “If it’s orange I know, it’s a yarn over row”. This trick will save you from having to keep track of each row, and you can just knit!

I have been trying to get a copy of The Easiest Shawl ever since I saw it on AllFreeKnitting, and Ravelry, those sites keep coming to this one, and I still
cant get a printable copy.
Scroll down a bit on this page and you’ll find the pattern. It’s not available as PDF at the moment.
Thank you for the marker tip.
Of course! Makes things so much easier. Happy knitting!
Hi there. I am wondering how long approximately it took you to finish the easiest shawl ever?
Oh boy, that’s a good question! It was made over a week while watching tv at night, so it’s really hard to say. My guess would be 6-8 hours, but I’m a slow knitter, so maybe less than that. Sorry I couldn’t give you a more definitive answer!
Hi again. Pattern isn’t making sense to me. You say co 3 and then knit 3. On the third row the yo begin but I run out of stitches on this row to continue to add another marker and carry on. How many sitches are you supposed to have on this row?
On the 2nd row you will begin with 3 stitches, but will be making 2 new stitches with 2 yarnovers. So, when you start row 3, you will be knitting 5 stitches. I hope that makes sense!

Hi Joanna. Thank you for all your help and the pattern. I was able to figure it out this morning. Initially I was going right into the knit stitch from the yarn over without placing the marker. This was leaving me with 4 stitches. Knowing how many stitches (5) that we are supposed to have on that row was super helpful. I started the shawl pattern from the insert on Caron Cakes last night. It is easy to follow. However, I love the way your shawl looks more. I look forward to having 2 shawl projects on the go. Cheers
Was never able to get a printed copy of the pattern. Allfreepatterns on fB, they were
no help, kept referring me to your site, so did Ravelry. So I haven’t made it. I’m unscribing your site.
Scroll down the pattern is on my website. It is not available in PDF.
Anything on the internet can be printed. The issue appears to be you not knowing how to do it, so you are leaving an unpleasant comment because of your lack of skills, very unfair to the designer, who has generously offered the pattern for use to everyone. It’s only a 5 row pattern would have taken about 5 mins. to write out by hand. So sad to see this type of thing happening so often.
