Single Crochet Beanie (Staggered Increases) – Free Crochet Pattern

I’m from New England, where the winters are cold and windy. If you live in an area that experiences winter, you’ll need a hat to keep that chill off your head and ears! This hat is made of only single crochet stitches, giving it a tight weave – good for keeping cold air out. That means it also a great hat for a beginner to try.

Typically when increasing in the round, we increase in same place as the round prior. This will make a perfectly fine hat most of the time, but it can tend to give the hat a sort of hexagonal shape at the top/crown. I’m imagining many of you hat makers nodding your heads right now, you know what I’m talking about. This crochet pattern was designed to round out the hat by staggering the increases.

We will be working this hat in the “spiral method” which means no joining. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to keep track of it, then move it up for each round. You can join each round if you want to, but you’ll end up with an unessesary seam. My favorite stitch marker for this type of project is a good old bobby pin. They are rounded at the tip so they won’t split the yarn, and you can easily move them up with just one hand.

The free crochet pattern below includes instructions for 6 sizes of hats, from toddler to adult XL, so you can make one for everyone in your family. I would have sized for babies, but I don’t have any at the moment! =) You can make this for babies, try stopping on round 7 or 8 and continuing to round 15 – I just can’t say for sure if it would fit a 6 month old or a 1 year old.
