“Fit For a Villan” Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

If you are a “Despicable Me” or Minion fan, you probably spotted right away that this is Gru’s scarf. I would have liked to call it that, but I try to keep my copyright infringement (and receiving of cease and desist letters) to a minimum. Regardless, this scarf will put the finishing touches on your “Gru” costume. Even if you haven’t the foggiest notion who Gru is, this scarf makes a great unisex gift in and of itself.
For a simple striped scarf, this pattern took a few failed attempts at designing. First I went with a knitting pattern. The swatch looked awesome, but would have taken until next Halloween for this newbie knitter to finish. Not what I was going for, at least not right now. Then I tried in half double crochet but there were these subtle lines being created by the way the stitches wove together…we aren’t going for extra striping here, the black and gray contrast needs to catch your eye. Tension seemed too tight with an H size hook, yada yada yada. Truth be told, I swatched like 6 times to get it all “just so”.
Double crochet is really the entirety of this scarf, with the exception of the first and last round being single crochet. It is worked in the round making it a tubular scarf, which means double layer coziness, and good use of your worsted weight yarn. The scarf I made was just over 6′, and I needed only one skein of black and two skeins of gray in Caron Simply Soft. Make it as long or as short as you like. Seam the bottom or not. Play with color. Lots of room for customization here. Happy hooking!
