Free Crochet Pattern – Bucket Basket
|Free Crochet Pattern – Bucket Basket
This year I was not as ambitious with my holiday gift making as last year, mostly due to time constraints. When you start making your Christmas presents months and months in advance, it affords you the opportunity to make large presents for people. In 2015 I made two blankets, one for my parents and one for my husband’s parents. Pretty sure I started both of those blankets in the summer. You crocheters and knitters out there KNOW that making a blanket is a labor of love and time intensive. December 1st is when I started on gift making so blankets were absolutely out of the question.
Functionality is always my first choice when deciding on gifts to make. Will it be used, or will it be thrown in the back of the closet to never again see the light of day? I’ve had this cotton basket pattern written down in chicken-scratch on a piece of paper and decided to brush it off and rewrite it. Since it makes a lovely, functional gift, I made one for my mother in law and each of my sister in laws for Christmas. They were a hit!
The basket calls for two strands of worsted weight cotton held together. If you have never worked with two strands held together, have no fear! It’s not hard at all. Just pretend the two strands are one and you’ll do fine. If you don’t have cotton, acrylic will work too. If you want your basket to be on the rigid side make sure to choose a stiffer yarn. Your less expensive, econo-style yarn would work perfect for this project, save your soft stuff for something else. This “bucket basket” is smaller at the bottom and tapered to widen at the top. Measures approximately 12″ tall by 9″ wide and would be useful for a variety of uses. It fits a few skeins of yarn quite nicely, so it would make a perfect project bag. The amount of yarn I used is a big estimation, as I was using a big ball of cotton…not sure exactly how many small skeins it would take but I made my best guess.

love the bucket basket and appreciate the crochet pattern! this basket looks so cool and I am thinking of the different ways you could personalize it for each room of the house!
Thank you! I hope you find it useful! If you make one (or more) I’d love to see pictures!
Thankyou so much for providing such a wonderful pattern to us all – it’s something I definitely have to add to my ‘future projects’ folder, and, even though I’ve quite a few WIP’s to finish off first, I’m definitely going to make one, or two, or more, of these as soon as I have the time 🙂
So glad you like it! They are very useful. I hear you about the WIP and to-do projects. The list is long! I would love to see pics when you get around to it. Happy hooking!
This is a definite on my to-do list. I just have to dig out my “hundreds” of my Sugar & Cream skeins….lol Thank you for sharing.
Glad you like the pattern – it’s a great way to use up your cotton yarn stash for sure. Enjoy!
Thank you so much! I’m starting now, so everyone in the family gets one next Christmas!
Excellent! They made great gifts for the family last Christmas. Way to go getting an early start on your gift making!!
Could you please tell me how many of the big balls of cotton I would need thank you
You would need 2 of the big balls, since it’s made using two strands held together. If you took the big ball and round it into two separate balls that should be enough as well, just a little more work.
Love the look of this one. Could I use a super bulky (6) yarn? I crocheted a basket with 2 strands of red heart super saver a while back and it’s too slouchy (not stiff enough). It doesn’t stand up. Thanks for the pattern
I think a super bulky yarn would work great with this. Let us know how it turns out!
