Easy Peasy Poncho for Children – Free Crochet Pattern
|Free Crochet Pattern – Easy Peasy Poncho for Children
A few weeks back I posted a free pattern for a fun, scrap busting poncho – The Easy Peasy Poncho crochet pattern. It is as simple as the name suggests, and so, great practice for a beginner who wants to work on something more ambitious than a dishcloth. Don’t get me wrong now, I love dishcloths, they are very useful! But they don’t keep you warm.
The Easy Peasy Children’s poncho is the same style as the adult version, just scaled down stitch-count wise to fit the little people in our life. This was a scrap-buster project for me (as evident by the crazy colors), but it would look great in just one or two colors as well. It’s simple to make the poncho as long as you like, just keep adding rows, 1 single crochet in each st and 3 single crochets in each corner (marked stitch). The sizing is my best estimate. With an H hook it was a bit big on my three year old girl. If you find the neck to come out too large, there’s a fix for that at the end of the pattern. Alternatively, you may want to try going a size down and making the poncho longer with as many rounds as needed.
If you make the poncho I’d love to see pictures! You can add the project to your Ravelry queue here: Easy Peasy Children’s Poncho Free Crochet Pattern
Easy Peasy Children’s Poncho – Free Crochet Pattern
G Hook: 2-4 Years
H Hook: 4-6 Years
I Hook: 6-8 Years
Note: Rounds number 4 on instruct to work in the back loop (BL) only. This isn’t necessary, I just like the way it looks, you can work through both loops if you prefer. For my child’s poncho, I worked in the back loop only on the rounds where I was changing colors, and worked through both loops if I was not changing colors.
A stitch marker is used to mark each of the 4 corners. Move stitch marker up to corner stitch for each round.

If you would like to add more length to your poncho, continue adding rounds of single crochet, with a single crochet for each st, and 3 single crochets for each corner st
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Pro Tip: If the neck area of your poncho is too loose, have no fear!

Hi Joanna. Several months ago I wrote to you and asked about a plant hanger, this was when you had the bottle cover. At that time you said you had been thinking about that. I am just wondering if you have come up with something. Also I don’t see a print button on your patterns or a PDFs to collect in my ebook. Is that possible?
I love your patterns.. Mady
Hi Mady,
Unfortunately I did not get around to making a plant hanger this season but I am hoping to for the spring. I’ll try to get in touch with you when that happens.
Not sure how to turn the patterns from the page into PDF…I will look into adding a print button though. Thanks for the heads up!
Did your seam line in front centre and back centre start to go of centre as you did each row
I didn’t really notice that, but if you find that to be the case then turning after each round instead of going in the same direction should help. Happy hooking!
Hi. I want to make matching ponchos for my 5 & 14 yo granddaughters using the easy peasy pattern. Can you give me an idea how much yarn for those? I saw on the adult one about 1200 yes but I can’t find anything on the child one.
Thank you.
A good estimate would be about 600 to 700 yards, approximately half of what it takes for the adult size. Hope that helps. Happy hooking!
Thank you!
You’re welcome. I’d love to see you photos if you care to share! Happy hooking. =)
I am making poncho for granddaughter she wears size 6x so what year should I use
Probably the 6-8 years would be the best. You may want to increase the length as well. Happy hooking!
What yarn is best I used bulky weight yarn in kit I usually use 4 play what is best and what weight is bulky weight thanks
Bulky weight would work, but it would make the poncho bigger so you’ll probably want to make a size smaller. Bulky is a 5, worsted weight a 4. Hope that helps. Happy hooking!
Hi there I love this pattern it’s so easy how would I decrease it to make for a one year old
You would have to chain enough to make sure to fit over the child’s head. And you would have to sure the number is divisible by four. Then you would increase at each of the 4 corners by putting three single crochet’s in each corner stitch, like the pattern calls for. Definitely use stitch markers to define your corner stitches. Hope that helps!
This poncho is adorable, thank you for sharing! I’d like to make for 2 granddaughters. One is 2 yrs 3 months, the other one is 5_1/2 yrs! I’m assuming to use G + H hooks correct?
Thank you again for sharing and taking the time to read this!!
G and H hooks should work great for those ages. Happy hooking!
Hello
I’m new to crochet..I would like to do this poncho for my 10 year old daughter.
How many chains should I start with? Which hook size should I use and what changes in the neck hole. Could you help me?
Thank you
Using a size “I” (5.5mm) hook and following the pattern as written will work for a 10 yr. old. The sizing is pretty generous. Let me know if you have any issues. Good luck and happy hooking!
