Easy Peasy Poncho – Free Crochet Pattern
|Free Crochet Pattern – Easy Peasy Poncho
Looking for the children’s version of this poncho? Find it here: Easy Peasy Poncho for Children
Is it socially acceptable to walk around with a blanket wrapped around you? Maybe, maybe not. Enter, the poncho. Ponchos are classic and fashionable. Also, being cold sucks, frankly, so why not make yourself and/or someone you love a warm cozy poncho with this super easy crochet poncho pattern?! Seriously, it’s 99% single crochet (one round of double crochet in the collar). It would make a great beginner crochet pattern now that I think about it. The trickiest part of the pattern is the beginning, chaining and then joining to the first chain to form a loop/ring. You have to be really careful not to twist that chain. After that it’s smooth sailing. If you use stitch markers to mark your 4 corners (which I highly suggest you do), I guarantee by the 5th or 6th row you won’t even need to look at the pattern, just keep rolling until the poncho is long enough for you.
Not only is this just such and easy pattern, it makes a great stashbuster. Use a different color for each round and you’ll use up those last bits of yarn, and end up with a REALLY fun looking layer. It’s hip, or hippie, or chic, or whatever high-fashion term you want to use. Truth is, it’s just fun.
Easy Peasy Poncho – Free Crochet Pattern
Small – G hook, Med – H hook, Large – I Hook, XL – J Hook
Notes: Pattern calls for working in the back loops just because I like the way it looks. Feel free to work through both loops if that’s more comfortable for you. You’ll need 4 stitch markers to mark the corners. You can use a fancy stitch marker, a bobby pin, even a piece of yarn. Just move it up each round for each corner sc so you can easily keep track of things.

Fasten off, weave in ends.
I’ve been looking for an easy poncho that didn’t call for sewing 2 triangles together! Whew, glad i found yours. Speaking of scrap yarn, I’ve got plenty!
Awesome, glad you like it! If you’d like to share pictures, I’d love to see them.
Do you have any idea how much yarn you used?
Oh boy, it’s hard to say. 4 skeins of simply soft would be a good estimate.
Could you tell me how much yarn I would nĂ©ed for the large and xl ponchos. It doesn’t state the yardage. Thank you so much Toni
It took my approximately 4 skeins of simply soft yarn, which has 300 yards each. So, approximately 1200 yards. Happy hooking!
I am an experienced but not great crocheter…I am having trouble understanding the Easy Peasy Poncho instructions….are there any corrections for it? The way it reads (to me) you would sl st 24 stitches to start row 2 and I am sure that is not what is meant….also I don’t understand is “repeat * to * around 2X…I understand repeat, but “around”…does that mean completely around the whole thing two times, for two complete rows? Thanks for any help you can give. I looked at the children’s version and that is different….wondering if I could follow those directions, just with more chains, and get the same results. Thanks!
I will try to help as best I can. After joining your starting chain of 100, you are working 3 sc in same, sc in next 24 st (not sl st). The repeat around means to repeat just for that round. Hope that helps!
I think what Millie means is in row 2 you do not mention where to put the first marker. Do we slipstitch into the chain 1 or the center of the 3 sc cluster? Thank you so much for the pattern 🙂

To start round 2 you’ll be slip stitching into the middle sc of the 3-sc group. Hope that helps!
A long story for you…I bought yarn, decided I didn’t like the pattern, found yours and am so excited to make this pattern. It looks like it will fit and no sewing involved, lol. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate all your time and the great instructions. I’ll send you a picture if I can figure out how to do so.
Yes I love a no-sew pattern! Enjoy and happy hooking!
In the first picture, it just looks like there are two corners, one in the front and one in the back. I like the “V” shape. Are there corners on the sides and if so, are the instructions different? I’ve only crocheted a few squares, I’m very new to crocheting! Thanks!
The poncho has 4 corners evenly spaced. Same poncho/instructions, just two different ways to wear it. Hope you enjoy making it!
Hi, can anyone tell me the lengths of this poncho. i.e. for small, medium, large finished ponchos. Or maybe a gauge.
Coz where I live I don’t have 4 skeins or such yarn, we only have one basic 3 skein tiny yarn and the baby yarn. So I am using the 3 skein one with the G or H hook
Hello,
The gauge (using worsted weight yarn and an H hook is 8 St and 7 rows in single crochet. The length is approximately 22″ from top corner to bottom corner, but that can be easily adjusted by adding more rows or stopping the pattern early. Hope that helps!
So excited to try this pattern. My daughter has been asking for a poncho. I plan on using the new Caron Cakes.
Ooh I bet this would look awesome with the Caron cakes! Would love too see pictures when you’re done! Happy hooking!
When I do the gauge of 8 st and 7 rows with the H hook then I still don’t know how big those stiches are to compare with other yarn. Is that a square of 5cm? Or 10 cm?
Or in inch-how much? 1 inch square? Or 2 inch square? Without knowing what the size is of that gauge, theres no possibility to compare different yarns and than it has no function to do that gauge.
But the pattern is perfect, I read everything and saw how super easy it is, also for beginners. Everything is so wel written, thank you!!!
The gauge for this project is 7 stitches and 8 rows in 2″ single crochet. Hope that helps. Happy hooking!

I’m already making another poncho from an easy pattern, but love this one, too. Thinking of attempting to convert it to a bed jacket, closing in the collar a bit and doing a row of dc skst dc through which a tasseled cord could be woven. Don’t know how soon this may start, but if it works out will be great gifts. Do you have any suggestions to ensure it will work, or concerns about the adjustment?
Hi there. I’m not sure exactly what a bed jacket is (a jacket you wear in bed? Lol) But it would certainly be easy to make adjustments to the pattern. As long as you are increasing in the same corners as the pattern calls for you should have no problems. I’d love to see what you come up with! Happy hooking!
Just FYI, a bed jacket is like a roomy sweater that you wear when you are sitting up in bed, to keep warm. It was popular before the invention on central heating, and mainly used by people who spent a lot of time sitting up in bed, usually because of long term or chronic illness.
So, the second time around you will have more than 24 stitches because you add 3 stitches to each corner. Therefore, you can match up the corners the second time around. Please help me understand how to fix that.
You will be adding 3 stitches to each corner, that’s correct. The increases for each corner are made IN the corner stitches.
