Raffia Wide Brim Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

Whether you are taking a vacation to a tropical location this summer, or just plan on spending lazy days sipping lemonade (or something stronger) while lounging on your back porch, you’ll need a lightweight hat to keep the sun off your face and the ever-so-sensitive back of your neck. Why not protect your pretty face in style?! If you are taking a vacation, this is a hat you can toss in your suitcase or carry on bag, and you won’t have to worry about it getting wrinkled or squished. It bounces right back to it’s original shape.

Clover Amour Crochet HooksI was a little apprehensive about working with raffia “yarn”, but it really wasn’t hard at all! Pulling back stitches was even easier than expected (wasn’t digging the first brim design so I frogged it…ribbit). The biggest tips I can give for crocheting with raffia is to keep a loose tension and use a bigger crochet hook than you would normally. For this project we will be using a “J” hook, and 3 balls of Premier Raffia yarn. You could get away with using 2 balls if you are planning on shortening up the brim by a few rounds. Raffia is super light and breathable. Say no to head sweat and yes to the beach!

K Hook – Adult L/XL

Notes: Keep a loose tension. This is a super-wide brim hat. Feel free to stop crocheting any time the brim is wide enough for you.
