Free Crochet Pattern – Spike Stitch Makeup Bag
Bags are my favorite things to make, and my favorite free crochet patterns to share because they are so useful! Not to mention, it’s July and hot, who wants to be crocheting up a wool hat?! Maybe someone who really wants to get a head start on the holiday gift giving season…but I digress.
When I design crochet patterns for bags, I reach for cotton yarn 90% of the time. Cotton is easy to wash and even more important, holds up to the repeated washing very well. Of course you use what yarn you like, and maybe more importantly, whatever yarn you have on hand at the moment! If you want the bag to be able to stand up I would recommend a stiff yarn.
This crochet makeup bag is big enough to hold all (or at least most of) the essential items for prettying yourself up AND it’s long enough to fit your eyeliners without having them peeking out the top – I checked. With an H hook, the finished bag worked out to 7″ across x 5″ tall. The drawstring was done as a chain with a J hook and two strands of yarn held together. You could just as easily chain long enough with one strand and the H size hook. A braid would look nice as a drawstring too!
My favorite thing about this crochet bag is how it stands up on its own when it is open, allowing you to grab what you need easily without your sh*t falling all over the counter. And, of course, the actual spike is just fun. If you are new to the “spike stitch” (as I am), do not let the verbage scare you, it is literally a single crochet. For this pattern, you just work your single crochet into the stitch one round below your current round. You can do it. I have faith in you. Have fun and happy hooking!

I’d like to attempt a box that I can put things in on my hobby table with those stitches – a medium sized one. How could I do that? I am a beginning to novice crocheter.
Interesting I was thinking of making some sort of a “caddy” with small and medium boxes nestled in one big one. I’ll work on a design and hopefully come up with something good for you. =)
