Ponytail Hat Neckwarmer – Free Crochet Pattern
|Free Crochet Pattern – Ponytail Hat Neck Warmer
Update: Now includes Video Tutorial: Crochet Video Tutorial Ponytail Hat
My hair hasn’t been cut since my little girl was born. That’s coming up on three years. Needless to say it’s a bit long now. One of the easiest ways to tame my mane is to put it up in a ponytail. But then I can’t wear my warm hats comfortably. So creating a convertible ponytail hat was my solution.
This hat can be worn as a ponytail hat, a normal hat, a headband, or a neckwarmer. It’s really easy to work up. And quick. The trickiest part is working front post/back post stitches – which I’m sure is no problem for most of you. If you’ve never worked with post stitches before, do yourself a favor and Google or youtube to learn. Post stitches add a really nice touch to crochet items. It’s worth it to know!
My choice of yarn was Simply Soft Party, but any worsted weight yarn will do the trick. Just make sure you chain an even number of stitches to fit around your head and you’re golden.
Enjoy and happy hooking!

Beautiful items!!! So talented. Love your free patterns😍
Thank you so much Terrie, I’m glad you enjoy them!
Love your Pattern!
Do not know what the following means:
FPdc
BPdc
Please inform me what do these abbreviations mean?
Thank you
Ingrid
Hi Ingrid,
FPdc = front post double crochet
BPdc = back post double crochet
Hope that helps. Enjoy!
What does BL mean in your pattern?
BL means Back Loop, or Back Loop Only
Umnmm. This hat was designed and posted by April Draven in 2009. It is still posted on Alldeeecrochet.com and on her site.
Hello,
This is a simple double crochet tube, I’m sure many designers have come up with their own version. I can assure you this is my own design, however similar to someone else’s.
Having looked at both patterns, they are similar. However they are not the same pattern. MOST hat patterns that start from the brim will have fp and bp crochets to give the appearance of a cable stitch.
This pattern also ends with the fp and bp crochets to give the cable appearance top and bottom.
Frankly, THAT one little thing made me decide to go with this pattern over April’s. Because it has a more finished look.
I love the ponytail hat neckwarmer pattern. I am on my second one now. My granddaughter (who has really long hair) is looking forward to trying it!!
Thanks again.
You are so welcome, I’m so glad you like it! If you care to share photos I’d love to see em! You can email goddesscrochet@gmail.com or share on Ravelry. I hope your daughter loves her hat/neckwarmer. Happy hooking!
How much yarn is needed for this?
Approximately 150-160 yards. Less than one skein of caron simply soft or red heart soft yarn. Happy hooking!
I’m confused. Row 2. Do you alternate front and back loop to do DC and continue around? Tia!
You’ll be alternating front post double crochet FPdc and back post double crochet (BPdc) to make the ribbing. There is a video tutorial for this pattern too!
the first picture on the top left, with the hair coming out the back, looks like there is an elastic band under the chin to hold the hat on. Is this something you had just for pictures or does it need an under chin band when worn like that?
The under the chin band is just the wig being held on my mannequin head. NOT needed for the design. Happy hooking!
Would you mind indicating the width and height of the tube. I am working with chunky yarn and need an approximation of size. I am not fantastic at gauge and such. Much better with dimensions. Lol thanks!!
To make it easy, just chain loosely until you can wrap the chain around your head snugly, but without stretching the chain too much. You’ll need an even number of chains for the pattern to work.
As long as you have a hook size to match your yarn weight, you’ll be golden. =)
Followed your pattern and finished the hat in a day! I linked my blog entry with photos of the finished design.
Sweet! I’m going to go check it out right now!
Since finding your pattern I have crocheted 4 of these in the past week. Thank you for your free pattern.
You are so welcome. Love to hear it! Happy hooking!
Joanna,
Anyone who invokes the Triple Goddess deserves support. I love your crochet patterns. I can’t wait to try them. I have rheumatoid arthritis and 4 nerves in my upper back that affects my ability (this makes me cry), but I digress. Thanks for the inspiration. Carol @ carolglynninmo@gmail.com
Carol,
Thank you so much for your support! I hope you are able to find a way to enjoy crocheting without pain. Blessings, Joanna
